Martha May McMahon was born on March 8, 1917 in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio. She was the second of two children born to Robert Elsworth and Maggie Leona (McCurdy) McMahon.
She was raised with her sister, Ethel, in Marietta. They both attended Marietta City Schools.
She married George Devol Padgitt, son of George Devol and Laura Elizabeth (Smith) Padgitt, on January 10, 1934 in Marietta, Ohio. They were united in marriage by Minister Homer Baumgardner of the Methodist Church.
Together Martha and George had 5 children: Marlene Ruth (1934-1994), Georgia Laura (b. 1937), Donald Lee (1941-2002), Lyle Dean (1943-1943) and Carol Ann (b. 1946).
Like many during World War II, Martha and George, moved to Canton to seek employment. She was employed at the Timken Roller Bearing Company during this time. They moved back to Marietta shortly before 1950. They divorced on August 26, 1974 in Washington County, Ohio.
Minus her short time in Canton she spent her entire life in Washington County, where she was employed at American Bisque Pottery and Colonial Quik-Cleaners and Laundromat. She had also been a custodian at the Washington County Courthouse and was later employed as a cook at Selby General Hospital for 17 years until her retirement. She also worked at the popular Merryland Pizzeria in Marietta for a number of years.
She was a Protestant by faith and was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother.
She passed away at 6:03 P.M. on Sunday, October 10, 2004 at Marietta Memorial Hospital in Marietta, Ohio.
At the time, she was survived by two daughters, Georgia L. Stewart Cunningham and Carol Hamilton and her husband, Ronald, all of Lowell; her daughter-in-law, Rebecca Padgitt of Enon, Ohio; her grandchildren, Mark A. May and his wife, Donna, of Newark, April L. Morgan and her husband, Calvin, of Twin Creek, Ala., Reuben E. May, Heath J. Hamilton and his wife, Tracy, and Shawn M. Hamilton and his wife, Mary, all of Lowell, David J. Padgitt of Florida, Jonathan Padgitt and his wife, Kim, of Enon, Joseph Padgitt and his wife, Melissa, of Kentucky, Roger D. Cunningham and his wife, Evon, of Coal Run, Rodney A. Cunningham and his wife, Debbie, of Ferncliff, Timothy D. Cunningham and his wife, Sonia, of Riverside, Calif., and Brian S. Cunningham of Russellville, Ark.; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George D. Padgitt; her parents; one daughter, Marlene Cunningham; one son, Donald Padgitt; an infant son, Lyle Dean Padgitt; and a great-grandson, Reno Cunningham. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Edgar Cunningham; two half brothers, Corbin Lane and Charles Lane; and her lifelong friend, Pietro Muscari.
Memorial services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 16, 2004 at First Christian Church in Lowell, Ohio with Pastor Merle Farnsworth officiating.
