JEFFERSON — Evelyn M. Matson, age 83, of E. Beech St., Jefferson, Ohio, formerly a resident of Grand Senor Manor in Ashtabula, Ohio, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, at The Jefferson Health Care following a lengthy illness.
She was born Nov. 16, 1927, in Levant, Kan., and came as a bride to Ashtabula and remained here her entire life.
She was owner and operator of Evelyn's Place, a local Main Ave. restaurant in the early 1980's.
Evelyn was an excellent cook and baker and gave much of her time to all three catholic parishes and gave countless hours to collecting food donations for the local food banks.
She was a past president and lifetime member of the Altar and Rosary Society of Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church and also enjoyed singing in the church choir.
In her younger years, she enjoyed playing golf, bowling, playing cards, bingo, board games and especially Rumecube.
She is survived by her six children, Sandra L. Malizia of Boca Raton, Fla., Louis A. (Sophia) Matson of New Bern, N.C., Kimberly L. (John) Pildner of North Kingsville, Ohio, Wesley P. (Joann) Matson of Boca Raton, Fla., Paula M. (Bud) Williams of Ashtabula, Ohio, and Amy R. (Christian) Lemke of Coral Springs, Fla.; one sister, Dorothy Foix of Sioux City, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Paul and Daisy Kenafake; step-father, Thomas Totten; former husband, Anthony J. Matson; two sisters; and five brothers.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9th, at Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, 1464 W. 6th St., Ashtabula, with the Rev. Fr. John D. Mulqueen as celebrant. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Ashtabula.
In keeping with her wishes, no calling hours will be observed.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Jefferson Health Care Activities Department, 222 E. Beech St., Jefferson, Ohio 44047. Envelopes will be available at the church.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the CHILDS & WILLIAMS FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 1440 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, Ohio.
