Jazz Musician. An iconic figure of the Chicago jazz scene, he was a tenor saxophonist who performed with many of the greatest artists in jazz history. Born in Rock Island, Illinois and raised in Chicago, he learned to play instruments during his teenage years and began performing professionally in 1929. Among the legends Jackson worked with are Fletcher Henderson, Louis Armstrong, Roy Eldridge, Earl 'Fatha' Hines, Cab Calloway, Benny Goodman and Count Basie. During his career of more than seventy years, Jackson received numerous awards and honors for his contribution to music. He continued to perform up until his 95th birthday, just prior to his death from natural causes.
