Melanchthon Culler served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted on August 11, 1862 as a Private age 23. in company B, 120 Regiment, O.V.I. for 3 years service. He was transferred to Company E, 114th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, on November 27, 1864. He mustered out at New Orleans, LA on June 10, 1865 (Mustered out by order of War Dept.)
In the 1880 Census, Melancthon and his family were living in Monroe Township, Richland County Ohio: He was listed as Melancthan Culler, a farmer, age 41 born in Ohio, his father born in Maryland; his wife, Mary E, age 30 born in Pennsylvania, her parents born in Pennsylvania; their children listed were, William A, son, age 10 born in Ohio; Charles A, son, age 8 born in Ohio; George C, son, age 4 born in Ohio; Roy E, son, age 3 months born in Ohio. Also living there was a,Thomas WEISER, age 16 born in Pennsylvania, he was listed as a servant.
In the 1900 Census, Melancthon and his family were still living in Monroe Township, Richland County, Ohio. He was listed as Melancthon Culler, a farmer, age 61, born November 1838 in Ohio, married 31 years, parents born in Maryland; his wife, Mary E., age 50, born April 1850 in Pennsylvania, married 31 years, had 4 children, and 4 still living, her parents were born in Pennsylvania; Eugene R, son, age 20, born March 1880 in Ohio, single, at school. Also living there were a, Abbie G BAKER, ward, age 12, born October 1887 in Ohio, parents born Pennsylvania.
In the 1910 Census, Melancthon and his family were living in Lucas Village, Monroe Township, Richland County, Ohio, page 282: Melancthon Culler, age 73 born in Ohio, marriage one, married 41 yrs, no occupation, his father born Maryland; his wife, Mary E, age 60 born in Pennsylvania, marriage one, married 41 yrs, she had 4 children, and 3 were still living, her parents born in Pennsylvania; their children listed were, Eugene [also listed as head], age 30 born in Ohio, marriage one, married 1 year, a mail clerk on railroad; Anna, his wife, age 32 born in Ohio, marriage one, had one child, and one child living, her parents born in Ohio; Theodore E, son, age 6 months OH.
