He was the youngest son of Clarence Arthur E Johnson and Bertha Johnson. His sisters were Eva R. and Mary M. Johnson, and he had a step-brother Daniel J. Ryan. His father was a Typesetter/Editor/Publisher for the newspaper. Lt Guy W. Johnson's enlistment record names his civil occupation as 'skilled compositors and typesetters', and he had completed one year of college at the time of his enlistment in the Air Corps at Ft Des Moines, IA on 14 April 1942. His hometown is listed as Parkersburg, IA.

He was a member of the 44th Bomb Group, 506th bomb squadron based in Shipdham, UK, and his plane was the 2nd B-24J #42-73506 'Black Jack'. The crew members were~

On 8 Apr 1944, on a mission to attack the Airdrome, Langhagen, Germany, his plane began to get heavy accurate flak on final approach to the target. The plane then shuttered from what is believed to be flak and the plane caught fire, prompting all of the crew members to bail out over Brunswick, Germany. Pilot Lt. Guy Johnson is reported to have been killed on the ground, and the other nine crew members were taken as POWs in Stalag Luft 1, Barthvogelsang, Prussia.

He received the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart.
