Mary Nutter Hett was the daughter of Joseph Nutter and Eliza Peverly Nutter. She grew up in NH in an old established family.

On 27 Oct 1855 she married a German immigrant, Augustine Hett. In 1860 they moved to Marathon County WI to farm. They had six children. One son,George, died in childhood.

By 1875 they made the long journey to Lane County OR, where August set up a sawmill. Three years later, August died, leaving Mary and the five children. With the help of her older sons, she continued to operate the mill for a few years. She later lived with her children until her death at the age of eighty.
