Bath School Disaster Victim
Cleo was the son of Guy and Hazel (Gibbs) Clayton. His mother died when he was just over one year of age (see picture), so he was being raised by his maternal grandparents. He was eight years old and in the second grade when the Bath School was bombed. He was not hurt in the initial school blast, but was killed when Andrew Kehoe, the bomber, blew his car up in the street just moments after the initial blast. A large bolt from the car ripped through Cleo's little body. He fought bravely for seven hours to stay alive, and was conscious until the very end. Cleo was one of 46 lives lost in the worst attack upon a school in the history of the United States.
