The son of William & Lydia Rebecca (Davis) Boyles, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Newville, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.
A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted in Cumberland County June 20, 1863, overstating his age by two years, mustered into state service at Harrisburg June 26 as a private with Co. F, 1st Pennsylvania (Ramsey's) Battalion, and honorably discharged with his company January 9, 1864. He then enlisted in Harrisburg March 31, 1864, mustered into federal service there May 4 as a private with Co. I, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.
He married Adeline Lauer in 1866 and fathered Reuben E. (b. @1867), Anna E. (b. @1869), Bertha E. M. (b. 01/22/79 - married Edward Herbert Sawyer), and Clarence B. (b. 04/29/93). Cause of death was "cardiac dilatation" with "central pneumonia" a contributing factor.
