Many people see a much brighter world because of one man and his ideals. Melvin Jones was born into a military family on January 13, 1879 in Fort Thomas, Arizona. Moving with his family he was brought east where he settled as a young man in Chicago, Illinois.
He was the sole owner of the Melvin Jones Insurance Agency in 1913. In 1917 he starts an organization of associates that in four years turns into the Lions Club. During the course of time the insurance business takes up a smaller part year by year. Becoming international in organization with Melvin leaving the insurance to work in the Lions Club full time by 1926. This was a labor of love as the 1918 budget showed that as Secretary-Treasurer he received 200 dollars for a yearly salary.
The honors were not only local but international as well, for instance representing the Lions Club in 1945 at a United Nation meeting in San francisco, invitations to the White House, and an award from Cuba. However, when all is said the most significant things is helping many people prevent blindness, public service projects, and the commitment to volunteer in many other ways. The tradition is still carried on today.
Melvin Jones died in his flossmoor home june 1, 1961. The wake was attended by Lions members, government officials, and dignitaries, because he chose to move from individualism to open cooperation. Helping those who neede the help can only be summed up in his own words, "You can't get very far until you start doing something for somebody else." Melvin Jones
