William S. Winegar served as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company H of the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the American Civil War.

He was wounded in his right lung and died on July 1, 1863 in the heavy fighting in and around McPherson's Woods on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg.

He enlisted in the Army on April 24, 1861 as a Private.

He was promoted to Sergeant and then to Sergeant Major (Field and Staff) on unknown dates.

He was wounded at Groveton, Virginia on August 28, 1862.

He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on September 1, 1862.

He had resided at Milton, Wisconsin.
