Twila Smith Abbott passed away peacefully in her home in Washington, Utah on Wed., November 21, 2007. Born in Fairview, Idaho, February 8, 1923 to Elaine and Welland Smith, Twila was the oldest of five children.
She married Max Gardner Abbott of Bunkerville, Nevada on July 8, 1943 in the Logan Temple. They had three children.
Twila was Secretary to the Commanding Officer of the Naval Training School in Georgia, a reporter and photographer for the Milford (Utah) News, director of the University Steno Pool at Auburn University in Alabama, Publisher for the League of Women Voters and Executive Secretary to Oregon State Senator Betty Brown. In 1967, she ran the Lane County Democratic Campaign Headquarters, coordination with the Bobby Kennedy campaign as he came through Oregon for the Presidential Primaries.
Her church callings included chorister, pianist and Young Women's leader. Twila had a beautiful voice and loved singing duets with her husband, Max. They often sang for funerals and weddings. She was a soloist for the professional women's choir, The Chansonettes, in Chicago.
She spoke fluent Spanish, a contributing factor to their decision for Max to accept a Fulbright Scholarship to teach in Mexico, where they lived for 16 months. Twila had an indomitable spirit. She was adventurous, courageous, curious, and very funny.
She was a great storyteller. She made life-long friends wherever she went. She was fiercely loyal and supportive of her family and friends. She never accepted that anything was impossible: "can't" wasn't in her vocabulary.
Twila was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Iva Lou Herd and Gale Marie Smith, and her brother, Robert Olson Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Max; her children, Christine (Darryl) Morrison, Steve (Judy) Abbott and Rebecca (Rollo) VanHoak; by her grandchildren, Christian Morrison, Arianna Diaz and Isabella Mann; and by her sister, Glenda Nelson.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, November 26th at 11 a.m. at LDS Chapel of the Washington Fields First Ward. Viewings will be held at Heideman-Russon Mortuary on Sunday, Nov. 25 from 6 p.m. till 8 p.m. and at the LDS Washington Fields First Ward on Monday at 10 a.m.
A Luncheon will follow the funeral Service.
Interment will take place at the Bunkerville Cemetery, Bunkerville, Nevada.
