Troy was a young Christian man working his way through Bible college in Knoxville, Tennessee, when he was killed in a workplace accident. His homegoing was as heartbreaking to his family and friends as it was sudden and unexpected. He is still greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Troy and his family were members of Calvary Heights Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, where my grandparents were charter members. During the summer of 1996 we were in Baton Rouge for a family reunion, and we visited Calvary Heights. When we left church that day, in all the hustle and bustle of greeting old friends and corralling my own children, I left my Bible lying on a back pew. When I realized my error, my husband suggested calling Troy Holmes and asking him to bring the Bible to me when he returned to college a few weeks later.
I did ask Troy to do that, and he did it, and although it was a small errand for a lady he barely knew, it stands for the way I will remember Troy: as a humble, courteous, and respectful young man who was glad to serve others in any capacity, no matter how great or small.
The following spring, to celebrate my fortieth birthday, my husband took me on an overnight trip to Nashville. When we returned home on March 8th, 1997, our children met us with the news that Troy had gone home to heaven the day before.
So every year on my birthday, I remember Troy and thank God for his brief but meaningful life. I know he is in heaven today, because he had trusted in the finished work of Christ on the cross to secure his future there.
I know too that the angels rejoiced when Troy appeared in that beautiful place, because Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints. (Psalm 116:15)
Rest in peace, Troy. Your race was well run and you may now bask in all the joys of eternal life. One day soon you will be reunited with your beloved family, and God has promised to wipe away all tears.
