William was born in Pottsville and grew up in
New Haven.After graduating from high school
he enlisted in the Marines 18 August 1966,at
the Philadelphia Recruiting Office.Sometime
later his parents moved to FL.
On 1 May 1968 he arrived in Vietnam and was
assigned to HMM-161,MAG-39,1st Marine Air
Wing.William was a door gunner on helicopter
CH-46D #154794 that was on a medevac mission.
The pilot had landed safety on Landing Zone
Hornet,during the monsoon raining season.
Shorty after taking off there was a loud
explosion heard on the ridge and all radio
contact was lost with the pilot,11 kilometers
south southeast of Ca Lu Airfield.
The helicopter disintergrated and burned upon impact.William died as a result of multiple
penetrating wounds to the body.There were no
survivors and all the bodies were recovered
the following day.It was determined that the
cause of the helicopter crash was due to bad
weather conditions and the mountainous
