Otto Bates Lyman was born to Azel Lyman and Mary Paulina Bates on 23 July 1846 in Green Valley, Tazewell, Illinois. The family moved to Peoria, Illinois where he met and later married Helen Watkins on 5 Oct 1870. They had five children, william, Mary Ellen,Katherine May, Maude Lucy, and Helen. In an 1883 directory of Peoria, Illinois, Otto is listed as a watchman for the Central City Railway and lived on 1813 N Madison Street. He died on January 16, 1899 and was buried in Springdale Cemetery, Peoria, Illinois.
