United States born British inventor, photographer and film pioneer. Birt Acres was born in Richmond, Virginia to British parents who were killed in the American Civil War. Acres returned to England where he worked in a photographic factory. In 1893 he demonstrated his rapid exposure plate camera at the Royal Photographic Society which he used to produce a series of pictures of clouds floating across the sky. In 1895 he used his Kineopticon camera to photograph the Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race, The Derby, and the Opening of the Kiel Canal. He died at the age of 64 at the London Hospital, Whitechapel, London, when appendicitis turned to peritonitis. He was buried in Walthamstow Cemetery. He worked closely with Arthur Melbourne Cooper
