Dame Gwen Lucy Ffrangcon-Davies, DBE (Dame Commander of the British Empire)was a British actress and centenarian.
She was born at 195 Finchley Road,Hampstead, London to Annie Frances Rayner and David Thomas Davies who had added "Ffrangcon" to his name in memory of his roots in Snowdonia in Wales. Her father (11 December 1855 - 13 April 1918) was himself a well-known Welsh operatic baritone, having performed and lectured in Germany and the USA, before being ordained as a clergyman.She and her sister, Marjorie were schooled at South Hampstead High School. Her brother Private Geoffrey Ffrangcon-Davies fell in the Great War.She made her stage debut in 1911, as a singer as well as an actress, but it was acting for which she became famous, being described as a legend on the classical British stage during her 80 year career.She retired from the stage in 1970, but continued to appear on radio and television until a month before her death.Her films included The Witches (1966) and The Devil Rides Out (1968), both for Hammer Films.She was created a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1991, aged 100, six months before her death at age 101. She remains the oldest person ever to be appointed to the Order.She died at Tagley Cottage and was interred on 30th January 1992 after a service at Stambourne church. A memorial service was held on 18th June 1992 at which the lines from Psalms 139, verses 9 and 10 were read:
"If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me,and your right hand shall hold me."
