Evelyn Rose Weaver was a registered nurse. At the outbreak of WW II in 1941, she volunteered to become an Army nurse and entered as a 1st Lieutenant. During the war, she served in the Pacific theater of operations and spent a lot of time in New Guinea where she rose to the rank of Captain.
After the war, she was stationed in Japan where she met and married Ralph Chapman, a foreign correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune.
Evelyn is one of only two female ancestors known to have served in the Armed Forces.
