Civil War Confederate Soldier. This eighteen year old resident of Anson County, North Carolina joined the "Pee Dee Wildcats" – Company K, 26th North Carolina Infantry on September 19, 1862. Private Briley received wounds to his right thigh during the third day of fighting at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (July 3, 1863) and was subsequently captured by his enemy. In captivity, diarrhea would further weaken his already weak body, and on September 4, 1863, Private Briley succumbed to battle wounds.
