William Enos Hogan, aged 102, passes away on Monday in Emo; Final rites set for Thursday
William Enos Hogan died peacefully at his home in Emo, Monday, July 28 at the age of 102 years, 6 days fortified with the last rites of the church which he loved so dearly. With him beside his wife at the time fo death were daughters Phoebe and Monica, Sister Mary Columbia.
Mr. Hogan who celebrated his 100 birthday on Canada's confederation, year, also quietly just a few days day ago had reached his 102nd year.
He was born July 22, 1867 in Beverly Township near Dundas. As an adventurous youth, he gradually worked his way northward in the lumbering and logging business. Shortly after 1900, he opened his first store, which was Van on Sleigh and pulled around in the area of Kashobowie. This he replaced with a log store; later converting it to a lumber building.
He also had interest in fur trading. He also acted as postmaster at Banning where he also ran a store.
In 1918 he moved to Emo and opened a store, which he operated until his retirement in 1930.
Always interested in politics and an ardent election worker, he cast his last vote in 1963.
An avid reader with talent for inventions, he never rested his mind, enjoyed the nature for its beauty, keeping himself young in activities through exercises. An attack of pneumonia in February of 1964 left him unable to pursue his active hobbies most of the time, the latter part of this year mostly in bed.
Mr. Hogan is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hogan,(Senja Wilhemiina Ristanen) five sons and eight daughters. They are Bernard, Joseph, Arthur, Gordon, Andrew, Muriel, Senja, Phoebe, Sister Mary Columba, Josephine, Lillian, Patricia, and Doreen.
He is also survived by 61 grandchildren, 73 great grandchildren and more than 31 great great grandchildren.
He was precessed by his first wife in 1894 and by three sons, Francis, Leo, and William, and one daughter Margaret Lillian.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, at St. Patrick's Church, Emo. Flowers gratefully declined. Mass cards or donations for Red Cross Hospital, Emo gratefully accepted. Rev. F. Florentine will officiate.
Rosary services will be held on Wednesday at 8 pm. at the Green Funeral Home and at 10 am. on Thursday at St. Patrick's Church.
Interment will be on Friday, August 1 at 9:30 am in St. Andrew's Cemetery in Port Arthur with the Rev. Fr. Montage officiating.
The remains will be resting at Jerkins Funeral Home in Port Arthur on Thursday evening.
