Served during the Revolutionary War. James Scarritt was private (Col. Butler's Company in the 2nd Connecticut Reg't. commanded by Col. Zebulon Butler). He was a "waggoner" from 25 July 1780 to 31 December 1780. However, the Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application submitted by his widow, Eliza Knowles, shows that he served for 16 months "in the company commanded by Capt. Curtis, in the Regt. commanded by Col. Enos in the Connecticut line."

Moved to Smyrna, Chenango Co., New York in 1806, "the journey having been made it is supposed by ox team." Husband of Sylvia Plumb (married June 13, 1781). His second wife was Eliza Knowles (married 18 Jan 1834, according to the Widows Pension Application File).
