Johnnie Cavaness Killed-- Run Over By Truck
John Cavaness, who lived west of Licking near the Mason bridge, had a gravel pit on his land and gravel haulers have been hauling from the pit to the highway. Last Friday a hauler named Payne was loading at the pit and overloaded so he could not pull out of the loose gravel and had to unload some of the gravel. Cavaness was helping and to avoid some water in the pit either stepped on the running board of the truck or attempted to and fell under the truck, the hind wheels passing over his body, crushing him badly. The injured man was conveyed to the hospital at Rolla, but only lived a short time after reaching the hospital. Johnnie Cavaness was 35 years of age, married and is survived by wife and five children. Funeral services were held at the Cavaness Cemetery Saturday conducted by Rev. Fred Stone.

Johnnie Thomas Cavaness was born June 15th 1898, he departed from this life June 8th in the Rolla hospital due to an accident on Piney River. He was 35 years, eleven months and twenty four days of age. His going was a sudden shock to his family and friends. He was a kind and loving husband and father and was well thought of by his many life long friends and relatives. He was united in marriage to Charlcy Helton October 21, 1917 to this union six children were born; Alfred, Roy, Luther Ray, Willie, Johnnie Wayne, and one infant daughter, Bessie May who passed away at a very early age (she died at birth). Johnnie Thomas Cavaness was the second child of Alfred R. and Mary A. Cavaness. One sister, Mrs. Edith May Johnson and a brother, Willie Jasper, all have passed from this life. Those who are left to mourn his going besides his wife and family are his sister, Mrs. Maude Helton of Licking, Mo. and two brothers, Theadore and Homer Cavaness of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. And many dear friends, who shall miss him and his smiling face, but who will always remember him in their hearts and hold his memory dear to all who knew him while he was with us in this life. And may God in his tender love and mercy watch over those who will miss him as a loving husband and father. Written By: Rev. H. C. Jennings

--Accidental Injuries Prove Fatal For Johnnie Cavaness-- Johnnie Cavaness, well known farmer, living near Mason bridge on Piney on route 32, passed away in the Rolla hospital last Friday a little afternoon due to injuries he received just a short while earlier when he fell under the wheel of a moving truck. The report we get is that he had been assisting a gravel truck which had been stalled in a gravel bar that formed a small island in Piney. When the truck started moving Mr. Cavaness started to step on the fender and ride across the river but in some way lost his footing and fell beneath the wheel of the truck which passed over his body before the driver was aware of what was happening. He was rushed to the office of Dr. Reed here and then was taken in the Smith & Ferguson ambulance to the Rolla hospital. He passed away about one hour after arriving at the hospital. The sincere sympathy of his many friends is extended to his wife and children in this sad hour of untimely bereavement. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon by Rev. Fred Stone and Rev. H. C. Jennings and the body was laid to rest in the Cavaness Cemetery under direction of Smith and Ferguson. Source: The Licking News Published: June 15, 1934
