Marilyn and her husband, Mel, lived in Lewisburg, Pa., for 27 years. The two met while on a blind date at Ohio State University, where Melvyn received his Ph.D. and Marilyn received her undergraduate degree. During their marriage, Marilyn was a revered wife, mother and elementary school teacher. She was a Cub Scout leader, a Girl Scout leader, a Sunday school teacher, a member of the First Baptist Church choir and an assistant YMCA swim coach. Marilyn and Mel were ardent supporters of Mel's fraternity at Bucknell University and were often seen on campus contributing to the needs of the members, pledges and alumni of Phi Lambda Theta, which eventually became the Chi Phi Chapter. Her contributions to her church, children, elementary students and community are fondly remembered and well respected.
After Melvyn's passing, Marilyn retired to Naples, where she built a home and was an integral part of raising her older grandchildren. Marilyn will be missed by those who knew her well. Her quick wit and boisterous laughter were genuine and adored. Although she professed few verbal sentiments, she did boast openly of her grandchildren to all who would listen. She passed away being very proud of Kaitlyn and Allison for the beautiful young women they have become. She often bragged of her grandsons, Riley and Reid, for their sports accomplishments, and in recent years, she wrote beautiful letters to little Livia, who brought immense joy to her final years.
She is survived by her son, Martin Woodward, of Philadelphia, and his daughters, Kaitlyn Elise Woodward and Allison Paige Woodward, both of Chicago; her daughter, Liz Woodward Sanders, son-in-law, John Sanders, and grandsons, John Riley Woodward Sanders and James Reid Sanders, of Naples, Fla.; daughter, Evelyn Woodward Olah, son-in-law, Stefan Olah, and the youngest grandchild, Livia Elizabeth Olah, of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Edward Martin, of East Liverpool, Ohio, and Dan Martin, of Boynton Beach, Fla.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by three siblings, Harry Martin, Dick Martin and Ruth Martin Turner, and two nephews, Timothy Martin and Richard Martin.
A graveside ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 28, in Riverview Cemetery, East Liverpool, Ohio. Marilyn will be laid to rest in the Martin family plot, alongside her beloved husband, Melvyn, her parents, brothers and nephews.
