Hardin Jackson was born in Mooresville, Indiana, on April 15, 1831, and departed this life April 18, 1904, age 73 years and 3 days. His boyhood days were spent on the old home place near here. In 1856 [October 7 in Morgan County] he was married to Mary E. Pruitt. To them was born one child, Alice, who, with the mother, passed away November 1859. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted on the 11th day of August 1862 to serve three years or during the war in Captain W. C. Mitchell's company B in Col. Benjamin Harrison's regiment, the 70th Indiana Infantry. He was honorably discharged from the service June 12, 1865 at Parkersburg, West Virginia, by reason of the close of the war. On October 26, 1865, he was married to Martha Ferguson [in Hendricks County]. To this union were born four children of whom Jennie and Ollie preceded him to their heavenly home. Otis and Mary, with their mother, one grandchild and four brothers remain to follow. He was not a member of any church but was a firm believer in Christ and often during his sickness prayed for the Lord to give him strength to bear the burden. Just a few hours before he died, he said that the angels were coming to take him home at a great speed. He was a kind husband and indulgent father and was always overjoyed for his friends and neighbors to visit him, especially in his last sickness. He contracted the disease of which he died in the war and was a great sufferer throughout the remainder of his life but always bearing his sufferings with great patience.
