Son of Matthew W. Bell & Elizabeth Dial. He was married to Lucy Ann Lord on September 9, 1855. They had three children together before he went off to war. According to an affidavit letter claiming his soldier's wages after his death, Richard Bell was six feet tall, with blue eyes and light hair. Richard enlisted in the 41st Georgia Infantry, Company B, on March 4,1862, and was wounded either at or just after the Battle of Shiloh on April 8, 1862. He was taken to a CSA hospital in Columbus, MS, where he died on June 16, 1862. He is buried in Friendship CSA Cemetery in Columbus, and is listed on the roll there but has no grave marker.
