Major League baseball player. From 2013 through 2016, he was a pitcher with the Miami Marlins. Raised in Florida, he attended Braulio Alonso High School in Tampa, prior to being selected as the 14th pick during the 1st round of the 2011 Amateur Draft. He marked his Major League debut on April 7, 2013. Fernandez recorded twelve wins with an outstanding 2.19 ERA, as he earned All-Star and Rookie of the Year honors, thus establishing himself as one of the best starting pitchers in the league. During the next two seasons of 2014 and 2015, injuries hampered his progression; however, in 2016, he blossomed and produced a career-high 16 wins. He saw his strikeout ratio dramatically increase with 253 strikeouts, as he achieved All-Star status. During the 2016 season, he set a Major League record with a 26-start home unbeaten streak that began in 2013. Additionally, he produced a 17 and 0 career home record that included a 1.40 career home ERA to start his career. Fernandez's life ended unexpectedly in September 2016 while he was piloting his pleasure craft "Kaught Looking" off the coast of Miami. He and two friends were killed instantly in a pre-dawn accident when the boat crashed at high speed into a rock jetty. In 76 career regular-season games, he compiled a 38-win, 17-loss record with a lifetime 2.58 ERA, in 471 innings pitched.
