born in Cullom, Illinois a son of Mary Elizabeth (Kreighbaum) and Levi Swarm he grew up on his parents' farm and first taught school in a one room schoolhouse. He was married to Magdalena Beatrice Frick on 30 July 1901 at Belleville, Illinois. Next he was a cashier at the Fairbury Bank with his brother Ulysses Sidney Swarm, but when his brother died of Tuberculosis he moved to Decatur where he bought an insurance company which prospered for over fifty years.
