His childhood was spent on the farm in Worthington Township. On April 27, 1882 he was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Emaline "Lizzie" Dull, she was the daughter of John C. and Agnes Mary Heisler Dull.
"Independence - Mr. J.E. Farst and Miss Lizzie Dull were married at the bride's residence in Mansfield on 27 April by the Rev. D.W. Smith. They came from Independence (Butler) on the 11 o'clock train."
Lizzie had previously worked in a "Suspender Factory" in Mansfield, owned by J.P. Rummel and his nephew J.E. (Joseph Emerson) Farst. (Circa 1880) (Western Suspender Company)

Della Mae Farst Salisbury 1883 – 1966
Lillian R. "Lilly" Farst Just 1886 – 1926
The 1884 Joseph's occupation was listed as that of a "Suspender Maker" in Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio. (Western Suspender Company)
At some point Joseph and Lizzie were divorced and Lizzie married John Helbert.
On October 28, 1908, Joseph married Margaret Jane "Maggie" Roller In Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio. Maggie was the daughter of John and Ellen College Roller.
The 1910 Federal Census lists Joe as married to Maggie and working as a "Horseman." By 1924 J.E. and Maggie were residents of Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio.
Joseph died at age 68 at the Toledo State Hospital of "Cerebral Arteriosclerosis," and was buried at the Forest Cemetery at Toledo. His death certificate lists him divorced at his death.
