Newspaperman; member Texas state legislature; mayor of Galveston, TX, 1856-57; delegate to Texas Secession Convention, 1861; served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War; member Texas state Constitutional Convention, 1875; mayor of Dallas, 1885-87. He also authored a number of books including "Indian Wars and Pioneers of Texas" and The History of Texas."
