John Ouligian, of Fairfield , CT passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 27, 2008, with his loving wife, Dottie Bengoian, his supportive, beloved Pastor, Fr. Untzag Nalbandian, his compassionate caregivers, Vitas Hospice nurses and special neighbor, Jedd Villanueva surrounding him.
Mr. Ouligian was born in Manhattan , NY , the son of Anitza and Garabed Ouligian, survivors of the Armenian Genocide.
He lived in Fairfield , since 1991, when he and Dottie Bengoian "Miss B", began their joyful married life.
All who knew John realized what a fine, gracious, gentle man he was and agreed that his decency, kindness and sensitivity to everyone made him a role model for all. He had a quiet sense of humor and a contagious, big, deep, hearty laugh.
John was the salutatorian at his graduation from George Washington High School in Manhattan. After receiving both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Columbia , he taught at Sawanaka and Putnam Valley High Schools in New York.
In September of 1958, the new teacher with "movie star" looks, drove up in a yellow Plymouth convertible with a V-8 engine and started his career as a dedicated, respected and very inspiring math teacher at Ardsley High School in N.Y. He reassured and respected all his students and "Mr. O" made everyone feel important. So many say that he powerfully impacted their lives and their values.
He was an avid tennis player and coach at Ardsley High School . Good at basketball, he often played with his students.
He retired in 1987 and in 2007, his former students established the annual John Ouligian Math Award. Included in the commemorative booklet were such sentiments as, "Your students want you to know how much we appreciate what you've taught and the way you taught and how much you've meant to us. You've been thought of with affection, admiration and gratitude by hundreds of your former students. We remember you and we thank you. A google of thanks…"
He was an army veteran, a corporal during the Korean Conflict.
He was past president of both the Ardsley Education Association and the Ardsley Federation of Teachers in N.Y. Representative to the State Retirement Board, many of the staff turned to him for advice as they prepared to leave teaching. One colleague said, ". . . his advice was thorough, thoughtful, dependable and knowledgeable." He supported Common Cause, the Nature Conservancy, and other environmental endeavors.
He served as Master of Ceremonies at many public events in the Armenian and American communities. He volunteered in Miss B's classroom at Riverfield School .
John's Armenian heritage and active involvement played a huge role in his life, shaping his identity and values. His velvety, deep voice was familiar as announcer and coordinator of the Armenian Echoes Radio Program in N.Y.
He served on various boards including the Armenian Youth Federation Central Executive; chairman and treasurer of the Armenian National Education Association of the Armenian Church Prelacy in N.Y.; member and past parish council member of the Armenian Church of the Holy Ascension in Trumbull .
He leaves behind his devoted wife, his "dear" "kid" (as he used to lovingly call her) Dorothy "Dottie" Bengoian Ouligian of Fairfield . They were inseparable and happy to have found such a beautiful love as they enjoyed blissful years together. He also leaves his son, Charles "Chuck" Ouligian; his daughter-in-law, Dr. Gail Anahid Guzelian; three grandchildren, Aram, Ani and Alina Ouligian of MA; one sister Susan Kelerchian of NJ, sister-in-law Rose Bengoian of HI; niece, Adrienne, nephew, Edward, grandniece, Lisa, cousins and many friends.
Calling hours are on Tuesday, July 29, 2008 from 4 to 8 PM, with Wake service at 7:00 PM at the Armenian Church of the Holy Ascension. Friends and family are invited to attend his funeral services on Wednesday, July 30 at 10:30 AM also at the Armenian Church of the Holy Ascension, 1460 Huntington Tpke., (Exit 51 off Merritt Parkway Right onto Huntington Tpke )Left into Church Trumbull, with the Reverend Father Untzag Nalbandian officiating. A funeral luncheon will be held immediately after the services at the church prior to going to the cemetery.
