From the 12/25/1983 edition of the News-Record (Gillette, WY):
"A funeral for Jon Roy Hardy, 26, a Gillette police patrolman who was shot and killed while on duty Dec. 20, 1983 will be held at 10am Tuesday at the First Christian Church." "Pastor Eric Battieger will officiate at the Gillette service and at a second service at 2pm in the Oshiem-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City, S.D."
"A graveside burial rite will be performed at 3:30pm in the Black Hills National Cemetery east of Rapid City.
"Hardy died from a single bullet wound in the neck after he was ambushed on Harder Drive before a hostage-shootout situation involving Dale Craig Chamberlain. He is the first Gillette police officer to be killed in the line of duty."

"A number of law enforcement officers from northeast Wyoming are expected to attend the service in Gillette, and officers of the Gillette department will serve as honor guard during both services."

"Hardy was born Oct. 7, 1957, at Bowling Green, Ohio, to Roy and Rosemary Hardy. Because Hardy's father was a

graduated from Douglas High School at Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City.

"On Jan. 27, 1977, Hardy married Pamla Dobyns at Rapid City. He enlisted in the Air Force in May 1978, and was
stationed with the 44th Missle Security Squadron at Ellsworth Air Force Base."

"After his discharge in 1982, Hardy worked in the security division of juvenile detention center in Rapid City.

In August 1982 he and his family moved to Gillette where he had since worked as a patrol officer. He was a
member of the Wyoming State Police Officers Association."

"Survivors include: one son, Jerome Hardy, and one daughter, Penny L. Hardy; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hardy; one sister, Brenda Linkenhoker; and his paternal grandmother, Marie Hardy."

"People wishing to pay their respects may do so at the Noecker Funeral Home from 2pm to 6pm Monday or before the
funeral Tuesday."
