Funeral rites were held July 20 for Joseph Paulinus Baltz, III, who was one of the first permanent deacons ordained in Middle Tennessee. Bishop James D. Niedergeses presided at the funeral which was held at the Church of the Assumption, Deacon Baltz's home parish. Father Bernard Niedergeses, pastor of Assumption and St. Pius X parish preached.Deacon Baltz, a member of Cathedral of the Incarnation Parish clergy staff since his ordination, died July 17 after an extended illness. He was 72.
Deacon Baltz was among the se­cond group of men; and the first group in the old Middle Tennessee Deanery to become permanent deacons when Pope Paul VI restored the ancient order following the Second Vatican Council. He was ordained by Bishop Joseph A. Durick on August 26, 1975, along with his brother, Bernard Baltz, and 12 other men.
He served in a number of liturgical and pastoral positions in the Cathedral parish prior to his ordination and dur­ing his 16 tenure as a deacon.
A Nashville native; Deacon Baltz was born in 1919 to Joseph P. Baltz, Jr. and Marie Ehemann Baltz. He was one of 11 children. He was baptized at Assumption Church and attended elementary school there. He was an alumnus of Father Ryan High School.
He Joined Martin-Bracey-Welsh Funeral Home in Nashville in 1943 as a funeral director and was retired due to health last fall. Prior to that post he was for 15 years an officer with Belle Meade Patrol.
In addition to his brother, Deacon Baltz is survived by four brothers, Lawrence S. of Hermitage, Alfred A. of Madison, Francis D. of Nashville; four sisters, Anna Marie Harigan, Bernadine Clare Baltz, Elizabeth Theresa Baltz and Catherine Delores Corbitt, all of Nashville, and numerous nieces and nephcws, and others.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother George T. and a sister Margaret Frances Taylor.
He was a nephew of the late Benedictine Fathers Fintan J. and Alfred A. Baltz of St. Meinrad Archabbey, Indiana, and he was cousin to Father John P. Baltz of South Pittsburg.
