Polo M. Fernandez, 80, of Springer, passed away Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, in Albuquerque. He was born May 21, 1928, in Albuquerque to Policarpio and Lucille Mainz Armijo. He was raised by his mother and his father Eloy M. Fernandez.

He attended the University of New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands University acquiring a bachelor of science degree in psychology and a minor in sociology and worked towards a masters in administration. He was a licensed land surveyor with the State of New Mexico Highway Department for many years and in private practice following his retirement from the New Mexico Boys' School as a teacher.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and a past member of Kiwanis Club. He was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, camping and arrowhead hunting. He was an accomplished wood worker and was a very private and quiet person.

Mr. Fernandez was preceded in death by his mother, his biological father, his father Eloy Fernandez, his daughter Yolanda Fernandez and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Molly S. Fernandez of the home; one daughter, Kathleen M. Fernandez of Santa Fe; four sons, Polo David Fernandez and partner Gloria of Santa Teresa, Phillip Fernandez and partner Jo of Ruidoso, Anthony Fernandez and George Fernandez, both of Santa Fe; one half sister, Carmen Green; three half brothers, John Armijo, Robert Armijo and Fred Armijo.

Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Springer recited by Deacon Edward Olona. Mass of the Resurrection will follow with Father John Cannon as the celebrant. Rite of committal will be in the Sweet Water Cemetery.
