Birth: Feb. 12, 1853, Sweden
Death: May 23, 1920
Carver County
Minnesota, USA

Samuel Lundborg was born in Sweden. In June of 1861, Samuel, with his parents Andreas and Lena, and sister Johanna, came to America from Sweden (his brothers Johannes, Anders, Gustav, and Lars had arrived in 1858). Following a short stay in Boston, they moved to the West Lake settlement (now called Monson Lake) near the boundary between Swift and Kandiyohi counties in Minnesota. Here they joined Johannes, Anders, Gustav, and Lars who had just filed claims in sections five and six of Arctander township, Kandiyohi county. On August 20, 1862, the third day of the Dakota uprising, Indians attacked the West Lake settlement and killed several in the community. Samuel was wounded and three of his brothers (Anders, Gustav, and Lars) were killed when they tried to help their neighbors, the Brobergs. As Samuel fled, he was shot from behind, the bullet striking one of his ribs. He hid in a cornfield near the Broberg cabins, and remained there until the Indians left the area. That evening he went to his home, tried to bandage his wound to stop the bleeding, then fell asleep. In the morning he found his neighbors, the Oman family, on their way to Norway Lake. After crossing the prairie, they found other survivors on an island now called the Isle of Refuge. The Lundborgs decided to leave West Lake following the attack. After moving to Afton in Washington county, and then back to West Lake, the surviving Lundborgs eventually moved to the West Union area of Carver county, Minnesota. Samuel married Anna M. Johnson in 1874, and they had three children.
