Inscription
In Memory of
Mrs. Marcy Bowen
Widow & Relict of
Dr. Richard Bowen,
Dec'd January 27th
1747, in ye 83rd
Year of her Age.
On the day Mercy (q.v. Marcy) died she was 82 years old, and Ætatis suæ (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of her Age) 83.
It is assumed her gravestone was erected before January 1752, when the English officially adopted the Gregorian calendar, and that the inscribed year of her death on her gravestone is based on the Julian calendar in use on the date she died. Thus it is highly probable that Mercy actually died on Jan 27, 1747/48 as the date would be written in the modern Gregorian calendar.
