Hiram enlisted in Steuben Co. Indiana, where he lived with his parents John Madison and Christianne Dygert Woodard. Was in 29th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers, Co. F His last letter to family was from Murfreesboro, TN., where he claimed to be working on building the fort there. His unit then went on to Chattanooga, and fight at Chickamauga. Unknown where he was captured.
