LOCAL CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIES HERE AFTER BRIEF ILLNESS
Wanton C. Barber, Villisca, Civil War veteran, died at 12:20 A.M., Thursday at his home on West Eighth Street, Villisca, Montgomery County, Iowa, following illness which began Saturday night. Funeral arrangements had not been made Thursday morning.
Mr. Barber had resided in this vicinity since a short time after the close of the Civil War. He is survived by seven children, who are Grover Clifford (20948609), Newell, South Dakota, William Wanton, Villisca, Iowa, Mrs. Anna Althia (Robert) Gourley, north of Villisca, Iowa, Mrs. Emma Alice (Mark) Sheridan, Carbon, Iowa, Mrs. Bess Mabel (Fred) Teas, Fremont, Nebraska, Claude Elmo, Chadron, Nebraska, and Al A. Barber, Savannah, Missouri. His wife and one son, Benjamin Franklin, preceded him in earth.
Mr. Barber's body was taken early Thursday to the Wolfe & Gourley Funeral home.

Veteran of the Civil War. Enlisted in Iowa County, Iowa, as a Private on 3 February 1864 at the age of 18 years. Mustered in Co E 6th Iowa Cavalry on the same day as his enlistment. Mustered out 17 Oct 1865 at Sioux City, Iowa.
