Edward was the son of Matthew Blakely and Alice Lucas. He was born in Ulster, Fermanagh County, North Ireland.
Edward was a resident of Mercer County, Illinois when the Civil War began. He enlisted as a Private on 28 Jan 1862. Mustered in Co B 65th Illinois Infantry on 15 Mar 1862 and mustered out on 13 Jul 1865 at Greensboro, North Carolina.
After his discharge, he married Catherine McMahon on 18 Jan, 1870, in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa.
Catherine and Edward had twelve children: Sadie Jane, William Edward, Alice (Longinaker), Fannie Belle (Coy), Thomas Henry, John Matthew, Edward James, Susan Allene (Johnson), Frederick Garfield, Edythe Evangeline, Mable Berdena (Gee) and Allen Winfield.
Soon after their marriage they moved to Randolph, Fremont County, Iowa.
Catherine died in 1898 at the age of 48 years. Edward passed away at his home east of Randolph following a long illness. He had been in poor health for a number of months. He was 76 years of age.
