Benjamin C Bobbitt was born May 17, 1845 in Shelby County, Indiana, the son of James May Bobbitt and Margaret Mann. James and Margaret had 11 children and settled in Fremont County by 1856, where they lived the rest of their lives. They are buried at Grandview (Knox) Cemetery, as are many of their children.

Benjamin was a resident of Sidney when he joined the Southern Border Brigade in 1862. He enlisted 17 Sept 1862 and mustered out 18 Oct 1862.

Benjamin enlisted in Co A of the 4th IA Cavalry on 22 Dec 1863 and mustered out on 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia.

Benjamin married Laura Virginia Littlefield, daughter of Horace Littlefield and Harriet Culp, on 23 Sept 1873 in Cass County, Iowa. Benjamin and Laura had five daughters. Eva Margaret, Grace, Laura, Mary and Kathryn.
