John was born, August of 1818, in Tennessee. He moved with his family to Boone County, Kentucky. On the 23rd of July, 1844, in Boone County, he was married to Ruth Lambert. Ruth's maiden name was Dearborn. On the 26th of March, 1839, in Boone County, Ruth married James Lambert. Ruth gave birth to John W. on the 13th of September, 1839. I'm not sure what happened to James Lambert, if he died, or they divorced, but John W. took the last name Lee when Ruth married John. They had the following children: John W., Rachel A., William J., Hannah J. Louisa A., Mary E., Joseph, Nancy, Solon S. and Catherine.
Shortly after Catherine's birth in October of 1861 the Lee family moved across the Ohio River to Rising Sun, Indiana. On 10th of July, 1862, John enlisted to fight in the war.
John C. Lee was 43 yrs. 11 mos. old when he enlisted in Rising Sun, Indiana for three years. He was in Company C., 7th Regiment Indiana Infantry. His complexion: Fair, Nativity: Tennessee, Occupation: Farmer, Eyes: Blue, Hair: Black, Height: 5 ft. 10 in.
John Lee fought in the following: Battle of Green Brier, Battle of Winchester Heights, Battle of Port Republic, Battle of Front Royal, 2nd Battle of Bull Run, Battle of Antietam, Ashby's Cap, Battle of Fredericksburg, Battle of Chancellorsville, Battle of Gettysburg, Battle of Mine Run, Battle of Laurel Hill, Battle of the Wilderness, Battle of Spottsylvania, Battle of North Anna and the Battle of Bethesda Church.
His Regiment fought under the commands of General Reynolds, General Shields, General McDowell, General Pope, General Burnside and General Grant.
On the 2nd of June, 1864, at Bethesda Church, Virginia, John died of wounds received in action on the 31st of May.
In numerous attempts to locate John's burial by me and my brother Richard we have not been successful. I was told from the Veterans Administration, Department of Burials, that he was probably buried and his grave marked with a board. Sometime later the graves in that area were dug up and moved to the Cold Harbor National Cemetery. If the information was illegible, at the time, he may be marked as an unknown soldier. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, built in 1877, is a 5-foot high marble sarcophagus erected by the U.S. government at a cost of $2,151. It commemorates 889 unknown Union dead who were buried in nearby graves located on the battlefields of Mechanicsville, Savage-Station, and Gaines Mills and the vicinity of Cold Harbor.
