George V. Shafer, 82, of Tiffin, died Sunday morning, Aug. 12, 2007, at Mercy Hospital of Tiffin.
He was born July 17, 1925, in Tiffin, to William S. and Gladys M. (Heilman) Shafer.
He will be missed by a brother, William Shafer of Newago, Mich; a sister, Esther (Reg) Drew of Haines City, Fla.; a good friend, Cherie Ponce of Tiffin; brother-in-law, George Marvin; sister-in-law, Alice Shafer; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death, along with his parents, are two sisters, Dorothy Quentmeyer and Eugenia Marvin.
George was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and attended Columbian High School until 1943, when he left and joined the Merchant Marines. He shuttled troops across the English Channel during the invasion and remained sailing until his retirement in 1968. He was a member of Tiffin Moose Lodge 846, Knights of Columbus 608 and enjoyed fishing, horse races and playing euchre.
Friends may visit 10-11:45 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, OH 44883, (419) 447-2424.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. David A. Ross officiating. A rosary will be prayed 15 minutes prior to Mass. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, with military graveside services conducted by United Veterans Council.
