"Shires, James M., Private
Resided in Gaston County andenlistedat Camp Holmes, near Raleigh, at age 22, March 30, 1864, for the war. Mustered in as Musician (Drummer). Deserted on June 4, 1864. Reduced to ranks in July-August, 1864. Reported under arrest in September-October, 1864. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Captured at the Appomattox River, Virginia, April 4, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, April 9, 1865. Released on June 17, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance."

Update: I recently found a copy of Mr. Shires' death certificate on file in Rutherford County, NC. This does not explain his burial in the Cleveland County Home cemetery though as he apparently was not living there at the time of his death. According to the certificate, Mr. Shires was a farmer, born in Gaston County, who died of "Mitral regurgitation" in the Colfax Township of Rutherford County. He was married at the time of his death, though his wife's name is not listed. His mother's maiden name is listed as "Baker", and both she and his father were born in North Carolina. The place of burial is not listed on the certificate.
