Alice was born Martha Cornelia Alice Snider. In 1874 both she and her brother, Adelbert James, were put up for adoption by their mother. They were adopted in Cherokee County, Kansas by Francis J. and Minerva Mott. It is believed that after the death of Minerva, Francis J. married the children's birth mother, Susan Mary Snider (neè Woody). Alice had one son, Norman Leon Jones, by her first husband and six children by her second husband, John Franklin Hammack, all of whom are connected below. After the death of John she married Robert Lee Burgess.
