James' hometown was Anadarko, Caddo County, Oklahoma. Mrs. Katerine Childers was his mother. He enlisted May 7, 1942 in the US Army. During his service he was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action, which reads in part "When Company I, 115th Infantry was violently counter-attacked by a strong enemy force, Private Childers, a member of an artillery forward observation party, alone and unassisted, remained at his post to provide covering fire for the withdrawal of his pary." He was killed in action at a place in Germany called Birgden.
