Another of north Tama's old settlers and one of her most beloved wives and mothers was touched by the hand of death this week. Mrs. Gilbert McDowall passed away early Sunday morning at her home, two miles southwest of town, after an illness of several days of pneumonia. She was one of the well-known and highly esteemed ladies of the community and had been for forty years. She was one of a family of ten children, eight girls and two boys, of whom but, four survive. Three of these are sisters. One lives in Ohio, one in Missouri and the other, Mrs. John McDowall, in Traer. The other is a brother, William Sprole, of Traer. The maiden name of the deceased was Margaret Jane Sprole. She was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, and was married there to the now bereft husband December 10. 1866. Mr. McDowall had come to north Tama with his parents in 1855. The couple took up their residence and have been with us ever since. Five children were born to them, three of whom died, two in infancy, a daughter at the age of seventeen. The two living children are Mrs. Andrew Whannel and Miss Eliza, both on the home farm. Deceased identified herself with the United Presbyterian church in Ohio early in life and forty years ago became a member of Tranquillity church. She has been an active member from the first, always foremost in good works, in the duties of the home, the church, Sabbath school and especially valuable to the Ladies' Missionary society. The worth of such noble women cannot be measured, even by those of her own household or those who have labored with her in the higher duties of life. The funeral was held Tuesday at 10:30. Services a t Tranquillity church were conducted by Pastor Currens, assisted by Dr. Swan. Interment in Buckingham cemetery.
