Born January 6, 1937, in Lexington (Holmes County), Mississippi, Dr. Carey was the fourth of five children born to the late Samuel Gwin Carey, Sr. and Lillian Doris Wadlington Carey. His parents instilled strong Christian values in their children and, as a result, Howard accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior at an early age.
He completed his early education at Ambrose High School in Lexington, where he graduated valedictorian of his class. He earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Morehouse College in 1957.
