Doug began his career in commercial television in 1954 in Joplin, Missouri operating a camera for station KODE Channel 12. He switched to Educational TV in 1964. He earned a BS in Education from the University of Missouri in Columbia in 1966 and a MA in Media in 1968. He worked as a TV producer then as production manager. He came to Penn State, University Park in 1969 as supervisor of Instructional Televistion and became manager of Media Servicesin 1979. The office of Instructional Media merged with WPSX-TV in 1981 and he specialized in the utilization of Distance Education Technologies, including compressed video, teleconferencing and satellite delivery of courses to students around the world. He married his highschool sweetheart, Betty Jean Bixler, June 6, 1957. They had 3 children, Paul Douglas, Michael Allen and Janice Lynn, who preceded him in death. He retired from Penn State in 1997 after 28 years of service. He then traveled the country with his wife, Betty until illness grounded him to live the rest of his life in Apache Junction, Arizona.
