Death: Feb. 10, 1937

Christian Leader: Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. One of the founders of Southern Methodist University and the Perkins School of Theology at SMU. Edwin Mouzon earned his A.B. at Wofford College, Spartanburg, SC.
He was awarded the D.D. from Southwestern College in 1905, a LL.D. from Duke University in 1930 and another from SMU in 1935. He began his academic career as the Dean of the Southwestern School of Theology. With the formation of Southern Methodist University he joined with Bishop James Adkins of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South with the formation of Perkins School of Theology where he served as the first Dean. He was the Bishop of the South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South from 1926-1930. He then became Bishop of the Western North Carolina Conference of The Methodist Episcopal Church, South (Later The United Methodist Church). As a prominent educator, clergy, and bishop, he was a key figure responsible for the unification of the three branches of Methodism in the United States in the 1930's: The Methodist Episcopal Church, The Methodist Episcopal Church South, and The Methodist Protestant Church. The Methodist Church had split in 1844 over the issue of Slavery. The 1938 reunification resolved that split. Unfortunately his untimely death was prior to the actual reunification in 1938. Mouzon United Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC is named in his honor. He was the author of several books and numerous articles, including Does God Care, The Program of Jesus, and The Missionary Evangel.
