Betty Jean Hooks Bankston, 82, peacefully passed in her sleep on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007, following a brief but insistent battle with cancer. She was born Oct. 29, 1924, to Norman and Mabel Hooks and grew up in Latexo/Crockett, Texas.
She moved to Baton Rouge, where she married Russell M "Tater" Bankston and worked for the State Department. She retired from the East Baton Rouge Parish school system, having worked 20 years at Sherwood Middle School. She spent her retirement years in Baton Rouge, Crockett and, most recently, as a resident of Lafayette, where she was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her son, David Russell Bankston and his wife, Emelie, of Lafayette; daughter, Bette Ann Bankston of Aberdeen, Scotland; siblings, Mae Belle Hall and Farrel Stafford Hooks, both of Crockett; three grandchildren, Kristen, Lauren and Matthew Bankston, all of Lafayette, who were the light of her life; as well as numerous beloved nephews, nieces and treasured friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers, John and Billy Mac Hooks.
