George Hampton "Hicky" Gohanna Jr., 85, was born February 3, 1925, in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was the son of the late George and Priscilla Gohanna Sr.
Mr. "G" was baptized at an early age and became a member of Zion Baptist Church were he served faithfully as a Trustee and Usher. He was educated in the Charlottesville city School system. He was a veteran of World War II and discharged honorably as an outstanding Army Sergeant. The flag draping his casket is given by a grateful nation for his meritorious service to his country in time of war.
He then became a dependable and dedicated employee of Charlottesville City Schools where he retired June 30, 1992, and then returned in a substitute capacity until his illness. His memory will be forever cherished by Frances W. Gohanna with whom he was gloriously married to for 60 years.
He was called from labor to reward on Thursday evening, September 2, 2010. It is a deep and personal loss to his family, relatives and his friends of the Charlottesville community. In their hearts there will live admiration, affection and respect for him.
In addition to his wife Frances, he leaves to mourn his passing a son, Bishop George H. Gohanna III; one daughter-in-law, Claudette B. Gohanna of Chesterfield, Virginia; one grandson, Petty Officer 2nd Class Steve C. Gohanna and his wife, Ayesha T. Gohanna; three great-grandchildren, Khaila, Kinnidi, and Keara; one step-great-grandson, Keion; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at Zion Baptist Church Charlottesville, Virginia, with Bishop George Gohanna III officiating.
