In 1826 the family removed to Huron County. Ohio, where his father followed farming. The son learned the trade of a blacksmith, which avocation he followed at intervals. He was converted at 15 years of age. On 12 December 1838, he was married to Miss Polly L. McGee, in Huron, Ohio. Her untiring industry and care was a great help to him in his work. In 1841, he was ordained and commenced preaching as a Free Will Baptist minister, in the Huron, Quarterly Meeting; but most of his pastoral and evangelist work for fourteen years was in new fields where churches were gathered and the Seneca Q.M. was organized. Here much good was accomplished and a hallowed influence left for years to come.
In 1855, he removed to Mason township, Cass county, MI, where he preached at Summerville for twelve years and organized the church at Berrien Center, and preached there nine years. He also did much missionary work and was never idle, working as a carpenter to supply his needs. Through his instrumentality the churches at Adamsville and Mason were built. He labored mostly in the St. Joseph Valley Yearly Meeting (Y.M.) where he spent the remainder of his useful life.
Rev. Ashley was characterized by frankness, the entire absence of all cunning, and loyalty to his convictions. But his wonderful good nature and grace, rendered his boldest friendship, compelling men to love and honor him.
He was a Representative in the legislature of 1869-70 as a Republican.
An immence audience, employing over 180 teams attended his funeral, attesting the universal esteem in which he was held.

The many friends of Edler Ashley, of Mason Township, Michigan will learn with profound sorrow of his death, which occured at home last evening at 6 o'clock from an affection of the spine. Mr. Ashley was in his 67th year at the time of his death. The funeral will take place Sunday forenoon at the Baptist church, near the Elder's late home, and the remains will be deposited in the cemetery at Adamsville. Mr. Ashley was widely known throughout this section and justly received the respect of all who met him. He was truly one of "God's noblemen".
